STRELKA INSTITUTE FOR MEDIA, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Big Future shows Russia as it may become. Imagining decades of change, the panorama depicts and explains a future in which global trends have transformed daily life in Russia. The research team, composed by Valeria Diminutto, Masha Jurkina, Alina Petrakova and Louisa Vermoere, tutored by Kuba Snopek and Winy Maas (founder of MVRDV) went on a 3 months research journey, to explore the consequences and the seeds of the future in the old former soviet industrial cities.

Economic and demographic mutations are symptoms of a structural crisis in shrinking industrial cities. The future for one of these – Kineshma – is a viewport on the afterlife of dying cities in the world: condemned to decay and to population ageing, they need to adapt to the emerging needs of their elderly population. The final exhibition consisted in a mural realized in collaboration with a russian artist (Valentin Tkach), accompained by a panel of explanation, a research book and a video.
